The Maze Runner (2009)

One of the best dystopian books, The Maze Runner is a thrilling, epic, mind-boggling story.

When Thomas wakes up from his coma, the only thing he remembers is his name. He’s trapped inside a giant stone prison with boys who no longer remember him. Outside the tall stone walls that surround them, there is an endless, changing maze. It’s either the only way out, or no one has ever made it through alive, but then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she gives is frightening: Remember. Survive. Run.

The Maze Runner takes readers into a mysterious and ominous world where its inhabitants are wiped from their memories and thrown into a confined and challenging environment. It’s a creative story told through flawed characters.

“Written in a time when dystopian novels were released like water from an open tap, this book was memorable for its amazing characters, unique world building and originality.”

The plot is a combination of intrigue, drama, and angst. It feels like a mixture of the survival element of The Hunger Games, the power structure of Lord of the Flies, the voyeuristic/controlling feel of 1984, and the genius character element of Ender’s Game. If any of those other books were hits for you, then I can say with certainty that this book will really resonate with you. The Maze Runner trilogy is a young adult, but fantasy adventure of the highest order. Very exciting, very fast moving. This book is a must read.
