A historical thriller with a gorgeous ’50s setting and a lot of tension.
Noemí Taboada travels to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, after receiving a desperate letter from her recently married cousin pleading for someone to save her from an enigmatical fate. She is unsure of what she would discover because Noemí knows little about the area and her cousin’s gorgeous English spouse is a stranger.

Additionally, Noemí is an unusual hero: She’s a glitzy debutante, and her elegant dresses and flawless red lipstick are better suited for cocktail parties than casual detective work. She is fearless, yet she is also strong, intelligent, and willpower: Not even in the home itself, which starts to haunt Noemi’s dreams with images of blood and death. Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both scary and intriguing; not of his father, the elderly patriarch who appears to be charmed by Noemí, and not even of her cousin’s new husband.
“The Gods of Jade and Shadow author presents a disturbing variation of traditional gothic horror in this novel set in the beautiful Mexico of the 1950s.”

The family’s youngest kid is her lone ally in this hostile home. He is quiet and kind, and he seems to want to help Noemí, but he might be concealing sinister information about his family’s past. Because the High Place’s walls conceal a wealth of information. The family was shielded from prying eyes by their opulent wealth and defunct mining company, but when Noemí looks further, she discovers tales of brutality and lunacy. And because Noemí is so enthralled by the horrifying yet alluring environment of High Place, it could eventually be difficult for her to ever leave this mysterious home.
