Matilda (2013)

An all-time classic covered in a masterful audiobook

Five-and-a-half-year-old Matilda is already reading the likes of Hemingway and Dickens while computing complex sums in her head at the drop of a hat. But she has a horrible family who despise her and her precocious intellect – which is nothing compared to the flat-out hostility of her new schoolā€™s headmistress, the monstrous Miss Trunchbull! Luckily, Matilda finds a soulmate in her kind teacher Miss Honey and together they set out to teach the bullies a lesson, once and for all!

“Kate Winslet, an obviously great actress, brings this story to life. Without a hint of timidity, she dives into each character, making them all feel truly unique without pulling you out of the story with unnecessary exaggeration.”

Matilda was Roald Dahlā€™s last masterpiece. He wrote some other books afterward but they donā€™t measure up to Matilda as among his greatest accomplishments. And it is a masterpiece. I love this book. This is my third, maybe fourth time re-reading it, and each time Iā€™ve read it, from my first time at a single-digit age to now in my thirties, Matilda never fails to blow me away or put a smile on my face. Dahlā€™s reputation as the consummate childrenā€™s author remains unassailable thanks to books like this.

In this Audiobook Kate Winslet was fantastic. We can’t see how anyone could have done a better job! What a great and uplifting story by Roald Dahl. You cheer for Matilda, Miss Honey, and all the kids at the school. Seriously, could there be worse characters in a book besides the Wormwoods and Miss Trunchbull?

It’s not a long audiobook and it’s rather lovely with how everything goes down at the end. Cheers all around for Maltida and Miss Honey!

The Christmas Pig (2021)

The Christmas Pig is a heartwarming, page-turning adventure about one child's love for his most treasured thing, and how far he will go to find it. This story comes from a very good place and you can tell it. The writing is so charming, filling the quieter moments with life. Jack is adorable. I wanted to squish his cheeks just how he squishes his piggy's. It's not all cute, though; silently Rowling deals with mature themes, divorce and estrangement and change and loss biggest of all.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005)

The real world is boring; itā€™s mundane, unimaginative, and dry. So humans create fantasy as a means of escape. We watch movies or go to the theatre to see something more interesting than the standard realities of the everyday. We paint pictures and gaze up at the stars. We play video games and roleplay. We dream. Authors like C.S Lewis and J.K Rowling show us this miserable world; they show us its tones of grey. Then underneath it all, they reveal something spectacular: they reveal fantasy.

Letters from Camp (2020)

As expected from an Audible Original, this is another quality podcast that I enjoyed both the performance and the story. I have no doubt this will be a great all-star audio drama based on the cast. I can't find any fault with this smart comedy which has a precocious 11-year-old budding journalist investigating a mystery at her summer camp. The voice performances are excellent, especially that of Sunny Sandler (daughter of Adam Sandler) in the lead role of Mookie Hooper. The writing is funny and clever, which brings up the question of the author's credit.
