I Really Needed This Today (2019)

I Really Needed This Today is a collection of quotes from the Today show’s Hoda Kotb. It’s a quote a day for a full year.

The book is filled with a daily quote, 365 of them with Hoda’s comments about what each quote means to her and perhaps what it could mean to her reader as well. There are inspiring quotes, funny quotes, and some extremely profound quotes. I believe the book itself is a love story to her friends, family, her children, and fiancé, as well as an uplifting read to her devoted fans, some of who have been with her as she journeyed through cancer, divorce, messy breakups, finding love and children.

One touching example is “Sisters mean you always have a back-up”. Hoda goes on to explain that when she was diagnosed with breast cancer she had to undergo an MRI. Being scared and overwhelmed and a bit claustrophobic, she didn’t think she would be able to do this. Her sister Hala who had taken her to the appointment saw the distress she was in. She told the technician to start the machine. She was then told she needed to leave the room due to the radiation. She pulled up a chair next to Hoda and said, “Nope, start the machine, I’m staying right here.”

In I Really Needed This Today, Hoda not only shares 365 sayings and quotes, but she also writes about the people and experiences that have pushed her to challenge boundaries, embrace change, and explore relationships to their fullest. Written with her signature wit and warmth, this book is the ideal companion to tuck beside your bed or to bring with you on the go to keep you motivated, recharged, and inspired each day.

Several years ago, Today’s show co-host Hoda Kotb began posting a variety of quotes on her Instagram page. Some were penned by a favorite writer; others offered a dose of love or laughter. She thought the quotes were meaningful only to her, but soon a funny thing started happening–reactions poured in from thousands of people who were just as moved. The quotes weren’t only inspiring Hoda, they were comforting and connecting people. So many of their comments read, “I really needed this today,” a phrase that inspired the book’s title.

This is essentially a self-help book by wayof aa memoir. There’s a lot of good stuff in here. It’s always helpful to have a reminder to stop the negative thoughts about yourself—like that you’re a failure because you don’t have a boyfriend/the job you want/you aren’t working out or eating well enough and so on. For some of us, giving ourselves pep talks is not our natural state, but Tara reminds us: If your friend were in a similar situation, would you talk to her that way?
