A Promised Land (2020)

The first volume of Barack Obama’s widely anticipated presidential memoir.

In “A Promised Land”, Barack Obama details his political rise, the 2008 campaign for president, and what his administration accomplished in their first 2.5 years in office. Filled with his characteristic intelligence and thoughtfulness, it vividly portrays all that his administration has accomplished and the ways they fell short. It also calls attention to how fragile our democracy is and how easily it can be derailed.

Even though there were no surprises on the book, Mr. Obama is still a skilled writer. He’s great at explaining and summarizing fairly complex ideas in a few short paragraphs. It’s also enlightening to see his take of the events that transpired under him and his process in coming to the decisions that he ultimately made.

“This book tells us the journey of a young man who was a student in Hawaii to Harvard University and then ultimately, to the White House.”

During his presidency, Obama elevated discourse and gave us the hope of not just a better America, but a better democracy, one that could be free from injustice, inequality, and partisan deadlock. To read his memoir is like reliving the history of this nation during its heyday, when it felt like we were on a trajectory of limitless possibility and progress.

The best version of this is the audio version which Obama reads himself, even with different accents. This is a poignant book that describes his multi-cultural, biracial upbringing and thus explains his constant urge to help people understand each other, his desire to bridge divides.

All the Light We Cannot See is an epic novel about a blind French young girl and a German boy during World War II. Marie Laure lives with his father in Paris, just across from the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the Master of the Locks. When she was six, she lost her sight, and her father built a model of their neighbourhood for her, every house, every road, so she could memorise it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her stick. The novel alternates between these two characters, follows them as they grow up from the 1930s and 1940s in France and Germany, and shows their parallel stories.
